Nursing Alliance for Fair Treatment of Kansas (NAFFTKS)
Advocating for Fairness. Protecting the Nursing Profession. Reforming the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
Stand With Kansas Nurses
The Silent Battle Nurses Fought and Won
Kansas nurses have long faced unfair disciplinary actions, excessive penalties, and a lack of transparency from the Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN). Small clerical errors, like a missed renewal date or an online form mistake have carried consequences severe enough to threaten careers and limit patient access to care.
But together, we made our voices heard.
In a major victory for nurses across the state, House Bill 2528, the Nursing Fair Treatment Act, has officially passed with overwhelming support and was published in the Kansas Register on April 16, 2026. This milestone marks a turning point toward fairness, accountability, and due process in how Kansas nurses are regulated.
NAFFTKS stood as a collective voice for change, advocating for legislation that protects the very professionals who protect Kansas. Because of that unified effort, real reform is now law.
What HB 2528 Achieves
The Nursing Fair Treatment Act directly addresses long-standing issues in the system by:
-
Separating license renewal errors from formal disciplinary action
-
Providing automatic expungement of non-practice-related disciplinary records
-
Establishing anti-retaliation protections for nurses who file complaints or request hearings
-
Introducing independent oversight and stronger accountability for future Board appointments
This law does not weaken oversight, it strengthens it by making it fair, proportionate, and consistent with due process.
What’s Next

Why This Matters
Kansas depends on its nurses, and now nurses have stronger protections in place to continue serving their communities without fear of unjust penalties.
Fair treatment for nurses means:
-
A stronger, more stable healthcare workforce
-
Greater trust between professionals and regulators
-
Better patient care across the state
NAFFTKS believes this reform benefits everyone—from patients and healthcare employers to the communities that rely on a robust and supported nursing system.
About NAFFTKS
The Nursing Alliance for Fair Treatment of Kansas (NAFFTKS) is a grassroots coalition of Kansas nurses and allies working to reform the Kansas State Board of Nursing and the Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
We are independent of any labor union or political organization. Our focus is legislative fairness, due process, and protecting the professional dignity of Kansas nurses.
Our advocacy priorities include:
- Ending excessive disciplinary actions for clerical or non-practice-related issues
- Including safeguards for expungement and fair appeals
- Creating mandatory transparency in KSBN communications and appointments
- Establishing grace periods for renewals and clear notification requirements
- Enforcing conflict-of-interest protections for Board members
This reform effort is supported by nurses, healthcare professionals, and legal advisors across the state, all united in advancing justice, balance, and transparency in Kansas nursing regulation.
To every nurse, supporter, and advocate who stood with us – thank you.
This victory would not have been possible without your courage. Many of you stepped forward to share your personal stories, not only within our community but also publicly during House and Senate hearings. That takes strength. That takes vulnerability. And that kind of bravery is what moved hearts, opened eyes, and helped bring real change to Kansas.
Because of you, HB 2528 is now law.
You gave a voice to the silent struggles so many nurses face, and in doing so, you helped create a path toward fairness, accountability, and dignity within our profession. Your willingness to speak up made it clear that this issue could no longer be overlooked.
While we celebrate this milestone, our work is not finished.
We remain committed to advocating for nurses across Kansas as this law is implemented, and we are equally committed to supporting efforts beyond our state. What happened here is not unique, nurses in many states face similar challenges with their licensing boards. Our hope is that this victory becomes a model for change nationwide.
Together, we have proven that when nurses stand united, meaningful reform is possible.
And together, we will continue to stand, for fairness, for transparency, and for every nurse who deserves to be treated with respect.
